UAE RTA Theory Test 2026: What's On It and How to Pass

The theory test is the first real gate on the way to a UAE driving licence — and the one most people underestimate. Here is what it actually covers, how the marking works, and a study approach that works better than memorising answers.

What the theory test is

Before you can move on to road training and the final road test, you have to pass a theory (knowledge) test at your driving institute. It checks that you know the rules, the signs, and how to behave in the situations that actually cause crashes here — not that you can recite a handbook.

The test is taken on a computer at the institute, and it is available in several languages. You choose your emirate and licence class when you register, and some rules differ between emirates.

The format

For a car (light motor vehicle) licence, the theory test is commonly structured like this:

Questions35, multiple choice
Time limit30 minutes
Pass mark24 correct out of 35
ResultGiven immediately, broken down by topic

That works out to roughly 51 seconds per question, which is comfortable if you know the material and stressful if you are reasoning each one out from scratch. You need about 69% to pass, so you can afford eleven mistakes — but not twelve.

Formats and fees are set by the authorities and can change, and some details vary by emirate and by institute. Always confirm the current requirements with the RTA or your driving institute before you book.

The topics it covers

Questions are drawn from across the official syllabus. Broadly, they fall into seven areas:

Why people fail the first time

The pattern is consistent, and none of it is about intelligence:

Memorising answers instead of rules

Free question dumps circulate widely, and they train you to recognise a specific wording. The real test rephrases things. If you learned "the answer to that one is B" rather than the underlying rule, a reworded question defeats you.

Skipping signs

Sign questions are a large share of the test and they are the easiest marks available, because a sign either means something or it doesn't — there is no judgement involved. People who fail have almost always spent their study time on rules and left signs to chance.

Ignoring UAE-specific conditions

Fog, sand on the carriageway, flooded wadis, and the behaviour expected around Salik gates and emergency vehicles are not generic driving-theory content. If you studied with material written for another country, you have a gap here.

Never practising against the clock

Thirty minutes is enough time, but only if you have felt what that pace is like. The first time you experience it should not be on test day.

A study plan that works

  1. Start with signs. They are pure recall and the fastest marks to secure. Work through the whole sign set until you can name each one without hesitating.
  2. Work topic by topic, reading the explanation every time. Understanding why an answer is right is what survives being rephrased. Getting a question wrong and reading why is worth more than three lucky guesses.
  3. Keep a list of what you get wrong and come back to it. Your mistakes are the highest-value study material you have; everything else is revision of things you already know.
  4. Take full timed mock exams — 35 questions, 30 minutes, no feedback until the end. This is the only way to know whether you are actually ready.
  5. Judge readiness by topic, not overall score. A 75% average can hide a topic you are failing badly. The real test samples every topic, so a single weak area can sink you.

Practise on your phone

DriveAce is a study app built for this test: 233 questions written from the official handbook, each with a plain-language explanation and a source reference, a full road-signs library, and a realistic 35-question, 30-minute mock exam with a per-topic breakdown. It works offline, has no ads, and the full question bank is a one-time unlock — never a subscription.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions is the RTA theory test?

For a car licence it is commonly 35 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes, with 24 correct answers needed to pass.

What happens if I fail?

You can retake it after paying the retest fee; your institute will tell you the waiting period and cost. Use the topic breakdown on your result slip to see exactly where you lost the marks.

Can I take the theory test in my own language?

The test is offered in several languages — confirm which are available at your institute when you register.

Is the test the same in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah?

The core rules are federal and consistent, but some local specifics differ — tolls, parking rules and certain enforcement thresholds among them. Study for the emirate you are testing in.

How long should I study?

Most people are ready in two to three weeks of short daily sessions. Consistency beats cramming: twenty focused minutes a day will get you further than one long weekend.
